Operation Sea Spray 1950-1960’s:
The US Navy used airplanes to fly over San Francisco to spray the population with a bacteria known as Serratia marcescens. They said this bacteria was harmless. It wasn’t. It made thousands of people Ill & killed at least one person.
Tuskegee Experiment:
The goal was to “observe the natural history of untreated syphilis” in black populations. But the subjects were unaware of this and were simply told they were receiving treatment for bad blood. Actually, they received no treatment at all. Even after penicillin was discovered as a safe and reliable cure for syphilis, the majority of men did not receive it. Many died and suffered.
Operation Big Itch & Operation Drop Kick:
In 1956, the Corps conducted Operation Drop Kick when they released 600,000 uninfected mosquitoes from a plane at Avon Park Bombing Range, Florida. Within a day, the mosquitoes had spread a distance of between one and two miles and had bitten many people. The mosquitos were released across several Black communities in Florida. In the predominantly Black community of Avon Park, dozens of Black people became ill, and eight people died.

Operation May Day was a series of entomological warfare (EW) tests conducted by the U.S. military in Savannah, Georgia in 1956.
Entomological warfare (EW) is a type of biological warfare that uses insects to interrupt supply lines by damaging crops, or to directly harm enemy combatants and civilian populations.
The tests were designed to reveal information about the dispersal of yellow fever mosquitoes in an urban area.
Operation Green Run:
Green Run was a secret Air Force experiment that released Hanford’s largest single dose of radioactive iodine-131. On the night of December 2, 1949, at the behest of the military, scientists at Hanford let 7,000 to 12,000 curies of iodine-131 into the air, where it rode the wind as far as 200 miles. For a sense of scale, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident released an estimated 15 to 24 curies of iodine-131 and the Chernobyl accident 35 million to 49 million curies.

The U.S. Chemical Corps researched the effects of decontaminating biological warfare agents such as mustard gas and nerve gases on humans.
The Chemical Corps found a way to bypass the Nuremberg Code which prohibits human experimentation. They let people volunteer for the experimentation without disclosing the dangers they faced. In other words, the volunteers were lead to believe they were doing a duty to the country.
Holmesburg Program:
An array of doctors, in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania and prison officials, established Holmesburg as a laboratory testing ground.
Hundreds of prisoners were used to test products from facial creams and skin moisturizers to perfumes, detergents, and anti-rash treatments.
Other experiments used the inmates as test subjects for far more hazardous, even potentially lethal, substances, such as radioactive isotopes, dioxin, and chemical warfare agents.
